He was drawn to the blank black spaces where advertising usually was. Haring would quickly sketch on the empty paper and then hop onto the next train. His 'Subway Drawings' started to get noticed by people commuting daily who would often pause to chat with the artist while he was working. Haring viewed his spontaneous art as a way to connect with the public and possibly engage with a diverse, broad audience. These drawings were temporary, either getting ripped down by fans or getting covered by new ads. To keep his art alive, Haring would sometimes produce up to 40 new drawings in a day.
